UK to Deny Citizenship to Refugees Arriving Illegally
United Kingdom
#citizenship
#refugee
The UK has tightened rules, making it nearly impossible for refugees arriving illegally to gain citizenship. From 10 February 2025, anyone entering through dangerous routes, such as small boats or hidden in vehicles, will be refused citizenship.
Previously, they had to wait 10 years. Critics, including Labour MPs and refugee groups, condemn the move. They argue it creates second-class citizens and violates international treaties.
The Labour government’s new border bill also boosts action against people smugglers. The Home Office says children may be exempt, but all cases will be reviewed individually. The policy is the subject of strong debate in Parliament and society.

Belgium to Enforce Strictest Anti-Immigration Policies Yet
Belgium
#immigration
#policy
Belgium plans tough new immigration rules under Minister Anneleen Van Bossuyt. The focus is on reducing asylum applications, family reunifications, and illegal stays. The government will double detention centre capacity and enforce home entry for illegal migrants.
Social assistance rules will tighten, requiring language and integration tests. Recognized refugees may see benefits adjusted based on integration. Family reunifications reached 21,000 in 2024, prompting stricter income rules.
Belgium will no longer shelter asylum seekers already protected in another EU state. Van Bossuyt calls human trafficking a "business model" and supports stronger border controls. The Dublin agreement will no longer apply.

UK Architects Urge Review of Post-Brexit Visa Salary Rules
United Kingdom
#visapolicy
#reforms
UK architecture firms warn that post-Brexit visa rules are harming recruitment. The salary threshold rose from £26,000 to £45,900, and architecture was removed from the shortage occupation list. Firms like Zaha Hadid Architects and HTA Design say this hinders hiring graduates trained in the UK.
They urge Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to lower the threshold and reinstate the profession on the immigration salary list. Increased costs also impact sponsorship and fair pay.
Law firms Kingsley Napley and Bates Wells demand a Migration Advisory Committee review. Industry leaders stress that recruitment flexibility is vital for meeting Labour’s housing goals.

US Businesses Fire Indian Students Over Work Visa Concerns
United States
#workvisa
#study
Indian-owned businesses in the US are firing Indian students without work visas to avoid immigration raids. Many students, especially those on non-work visas, are affected.
A student from Hyderabad lost his restaurant job suddenly due to employer fears of penalties. Indian restaurants and grocery stores, which rely on student workers, are struggling. Businesses now only hire workers with valid visas.
Consultant Dinesh Makkula said students took jobs to cover expenses but now face unemployment. Stricter US immigration laws mean working without authorization risks visa cancellation or deportation. Students are seeking legal ways to support themselves.
