Family Reunification Visa Switzerland

About

You can submit a Family Reunification Visa application if you reside in Switzerland and wish to bring in foreign family members who reside elsewhere.

According to the authorities, family reunification may be a right or a possibility depending on your residency permission. Unlike the C permit, the B permit does not always offer you the right to a family reunion. However, the authorities may still grant you this privilege. No one seeking asylum is permitted.

Eligibility

If you are a national of Switzerland or from an EU/EFTA nation. In that case, you are permitted to bring the following family members to Switzerland.

  • Spouse or a registered partner.
  • If your parents and grandparents are dependent and citizens of an EU/EFTA nation (unless you are in education or training).
  • Children and grandchildren under 18 or dependants if they are from an EU/EFTA country, under the age of 21.

However, if you are a foreign national, you are only permitted to bring your partner and children under 18.

Documents

When your family members enter Switzerland, they must have the following documents.

  • Valid passport or identity card.
  • A visa, if necessary.
  • Certificate from the nation of origin evidencing your relationship.
  • Certificate from authorities of the country of origin for dependants, or provenance which prove their dependancy on you or that they were living along with you.
  • In the case of a spouse, an enrolment certificate in a language course, if they cannot communicate in the language used as an official language where you live.

Process

When you apply for Family Reunification Visa, Switzerland must recognise your marriage or legally recognised partnership. If you are not legally married to your partner, you cannot bring them with you if you have a Swiss passport and are in a dual-national relationship.

When to Apply
In principle, you have five years to petition for family reunification. However, if the application is for children over 12, you only have one year. It will help them fit into Swiss society more quickly.

You must wait three years after receiving an F permit to request family reunification if you were granted provisional admission to Switzerland.
