The Swiss government offers a National Visa that enables visitors from all over the world to remain in the nation for longer than 90 days. The visa is offered to students or for family reunification. The visa is allotted for a limited amount of time. It lets you focus on your studies and other activities.

Eligibility

To be eligible;

  • You must be a student applying for more than 90 days' stay in Switzerland.
  • You can also apply for family reunification.

Documents

If you are applying as a student, you must provide the following documents. 

  • Application forms for three national (type D) visas, filled out and signed by the applicant.
  • Four recent passport images that are identical.
  • Photocopies and digital files are not accepted.
  • A valid passport or any other travel documents in two copies (picture, data and signature pages only).
  • Non-US. Citizens: two notarized copies of identification proving residency in the United States, such as a valid permanent.
  • A resident card (green card), H1B visa (plus I-797), F-1 visa (plus I-20), etc.
  • Two copies of the confirmation or registration letter from the Swiss school, university, etc., detailing the course's language requirements.
  • Two copies of the receipt of the payment of the school tuition fee.
  • 2 copies of a statement containing exact details of income and assets, with official proof.
  • Bank statements
  • Two copies of all prior diplomas and academic credentials
  • Copies (2) of your resume (schools attended, biographical data, etc.).
  • Two copies of a short essay about the applicant's future plans.

But if you are requesting a family reunion, different documents may be required, such as verification of your relationship.

Process

When to Apply
A visa request's processing period may vary depending on the circumstances. Therefore, it is highly advised to start the appropriate processes ahead of time so that the visa can be given when needed.

Visa Processing Time
After receiving an application, the cantonal migration office typically takes 8 to 10 weeks to decide. Please contact the appropriate migration office in Switzerland for additional details.

How to Apply
Pick a safe delivery service that offers to track. Please mail in your entire application package. Application files are not accepted at visa counters.  

Your request is referred to the appropriate cantonal foreign policy where you plan to study for a decision. And the representation can only grant your visa after receiving the approval. After that, you must submit documents, and your application will be processed.

The visa allows you to stay in Switzerland for more than 90 days. Initially, it is valid for 1 year, which can be extended later.

Fees
The visa fees may vary according to age. It is free for children under 8 years of age. You have to pay 46 USD for a child between 6 and 11. Above that, the visa costs 92 USD for adults. 

Pay the fee by money order (made to the competent Consulate General or the Embassy of Switzerland) when submitting the application.

Extension

You may apply for the renewal of your visa before it expires. It can take a month or even more in some cases. Moreover, in some cases, the visa also allows you to become a permanent resident.
