Work Permit Switzerland

About

Authorization is required for the hiring of foreign workers by employers in Switzerland. In general, the employer works with the Swiss cantonal authorities to perform the necessary actions to get the relevant authorizations.

Only after the requested authorizations have been given is the entry visa issued.

Eligibility

You are eligible for this visa if;

  • You are invited by a Swiss employee.
  • You fulfil all the requirements.

Documents

The following documents are, in general, required when applying for an Entry Visa for work in Switzerland:

  • An authorization issued by the cantonal authority (original or copy).
  • Valid passport (original)
  • Copy of the passport (photo, data and signature pages only).
  • Additional, for Non-US citizens: notarised copy of US permanent resident card or US visa (and I-20, DS-2019, I-797).
  • A recent photograph
  • Two copies of a letter of appointment/work contract.

Process

To begin, your employer must submit an application for your residence permit to the regional government employment services in Switzerland. In this country, there are no independent work and residency permits. Instead, you will be given a residency permit to work.

When to Apply
As mentioned above, the process of application is started by the employer. With that, you are allowed to apply for a Work Permit.

Visa Processing Time
The visa may take a couple of months to process. The process can be further delayed depending on the documents provided by you.

How to Apply
You must apply for a Swiss Work Permit from your home country while your employers apply for your Swiss residence permit. To enter Switzerland, most non-EU/EFTA nationals require a long-stay visa. You can apply for a Work Visa in Switzerland at the Swiss Embassy or Consulate in your country.
