Depending on the length and reason of the stay, anyone planning to move to Mexico for more than six months will need a Permanent Resident Visa or a Resident Card. 

A Permanent Resident Card is required for foreigners who wish to live in Mexico permanently. This card is often known as the Mexican Retirement Visa since it is a popular choice among retirees.

Eligibility

To be eligible you;

  • meet all the financial requirements.
  • have proper investment, job or other attachment to the country.

Documents

You must provide the following documents. 

  • The form for a visa is printed across one page, double-sided, and must be correctly completed and signed.
  • Original and photocopy of the page holding the photograph and personal data from travel and identity documents.
  • An authentic photocopy of the migration document confirming your lawful presence in Canada (only for those who are not Canadian citizens).
  • One photograph, 3.9 cm × 3.1 cm, frontal view and white background, with the subject's face uncovered and without eyeglasses.
  • Additional documentation about your trip's purpose.

Process

Visa Processing Time
Starting from the day you send your completed documentation at the National Migration Institute, a Mexico Permanent Resident Visa takes 10 - 15 working days to process.

How to Apply
You must apply for a Mexico Permanent Resident Card upon arrival in Mexico. Before that, depending on your travel objective, you must register for a Permanent Resident Visa at Mexican Consulate in your country. To avoid any problems, you can also engage a visa adviser.

Duration & Fees

Duration
The Permanent Resident Card has no expiration date and is valid for endless periods. As a result, unlike the Temporary Resident Card, it does not need to be renewed every few years.

Fees
When applying for a Permanent Resident Card, you must also pay a charge (about 5,000 MXN or 250 US).

Extension

There is no need to submit an extension request.
