Students are allowed to stay in France for educational purposes. They need to apply for Student Visa and must be at least 18 years of age. Also, you should have an enrollment certificate. There is also an entrance exam to be cleared by the students applying for this visa. Moreover, the stay can be short or long depending on your course.

What type of visa do you need to study in France?

There are three kinds of visas for study in France.

'Schengen' Short-Stay Student Visa
It's for studies that aren't longer than three months. It is typically for language courses or short-term study programmes. It is free, and you will not need a residence permit. Also, you will be able to apply for a new one when your current one expires.

Temporary Long-Stay Visa
A Temporary Long-Stay Visa is for studies that take 3 to 6 months to complete.

Long-Stay Visa
Long-Stay Visas are for studies that last longer than six months. If you wish to extend your visa, you'll need to apply for a Residence Permit (one year).

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible, you must:

  • be at least 18 years old and have already decided on your studies or training course.
  • need to get accepted into a higher education institution.

Language requirements for studying in France

You need to take the following language tests if you apply to a university in France.

English language proficiency
It is required to take if your degree has English as a medium of instruction. Accepted tests are DELF/DALF or TCF.

French language proficiency
You need to apply for this if your degree is to be taught in French. Thus, the accepted test for that are TOEFLIELTSPTE Academic or C1 Advanced.

Documents

Your documents should include:

  • Passport and other identity proofs.
  • The certificate of enrolment in the higher education institution that has accepted you.
  • Proof that you have passed the enrollment exam.

Process

The Student Visa for France is processed in three ways.

  • For a training course not exceeding three months, you will be issued a Short-Stay Visa;
  • A training course exceeding three months or six months, you will be issued a Temporary Long-Stay Visa. Alos, it will require no further formalities on your arrival in France.
  • For training or a course exceeding six months, you will be issued a Long-Stay Visa. It is equivalent to a Residence Permit, which will be subject to further formalities on your arrival in France.

Fees
Visa pricing for countries or territories with EEF procedure is 50 €. While pricing for other countries is 99 €. This amount is given as an indication and some special cases may give rise to different rates.

EXTENSION

You can apply for an extension of your visa after your visa expires. The extension depends upon the changes in the time span of your visa.
