As per the Qatar administration, you are supposed to have a Student Visa to study in the country. Having this visa is considered as necessary as the admission itself. Firstly, you should be invited by an educational institute in Qatar, and then you must acquire a Student Visa.
For most universities, including Qatar University, there can be two types of international students.
Fee-Paying Students
If the prospective foreign student intends to study at Qatar University without a scholarship, he must register online for a Study Visa.
The applicant should apply under Qatar University sponsorship plus upload the required documents throughout the same admission timeline as foreign students.
Study on Scholarship
If a prospective overseas student plans to study at Qatar University in case he gets a scholarship, he does not have to fill out and finish the visa application.
International students who obtain a scholarship from Qatar University will be issued a Student Visa through the Scholarships and International Admissions Section.

All prospective international students, excluding GCC citizens, who do not have a valid Qatar residency permit, must apply for a Student Visa within the specified time frame. They must also upload the appropriate documents within that specific period. Students who have been awarded a scholarship to study in Qatar are exempt from applying for this visa.

Student Visa can take a few weeks or even a month to process. The processing time mainly depends on documents' availability and other factors.
