About

North-West University, in short NWU, is a public institute located on 3 campuses in Vanderbijlpark, Potchefstroom, and Mahikeng in South Africa. This institute came into existence through the merger of the University of North-West (formerly the University of Bophuthatswana) and the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education in 2004. With its merged status, this institute became one of the largest universities in South Africa, with the 3rd largest student population (distance and full-time education) in the country. NWU’s head offices are located on the Potchefstroom campus.

This university is committed to functioning as an integrated, unitary, muti-campus institution that enables equity and globally competitive research and teaching across all 3 campuses of North-West University. All core activities, research, teaching and learning are intertwined with innovation and community engagement in its 8 faculties, most of which serve both contact and distance students. The North-West University offers more than just an education. Intellectually, students benefit from great choice and flexibility, empowering them to start preparing for their careers and fulfilling their potential. Through collaboration with other institutions and universities, NWU is part of the global higher education community. Internationalization activities of the university include staff and student exchange and cooperation in research, academic, sports and cultural matters.

Students

NWU has a student population of 73,414 individuals. Student life at the university is responsible for developing and expanding the co-curricular atmosphere known for its inherent diversity and celebrated for its impact and relevance in the student community. The university achieves this by providing various co-curricular services, opportunities and programs through which students can improve and develop their critical competencies and skills. It remains committed to providing a safe, diverse and valuable student experience with the terrains of sports, arts and culture, residence life, student leadership, student media, and psycho-social and health support.

Sport at the North-West University keeps you going with several world-class coaches in various sports codes and outstanding facilities. NWU strives to ensure competitive, and quality teams in all forms of sports participate and compete in league and USSA (University Sport South Africa) competitions.

Accommodation

The residences at the university are the heartbeat of student life at North-West University. On-campus housing is situated in the proclaimed natural reserve. Campus residences are within walking distance from administrative and academic buildings. House parents and House committees manage all residencies. NWU accommodation is self-catering.
