You can apply for a Study Visa by filling out Form BI-1738 if you are an international student who wants to study in South Africa. You must apply for a study visa at a  Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) Center nearby the college or university you intend to attend or at the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or Mission abroad.

Eligibility

If you want to travel to South Africa, you will require the following.

  • A valid passport or other approved travel document for the expected length of your stay. 
  • Passport page that is at least partially blank for a current visa, if necessary. 
  • Enough money to cover all of your daily expenses while you're visiting. 
  • An onward or return ticket. 
  • Suppose your tour begins or includes travelling through the South American or African yellow fever belt. In that case, you must have a certificate for yellow fever.

Documents

The following documents must accompany the BI-1738 application form.

  • A passport that is still valid at least 30 days after the anticipated visit's expiration.
  • Paying the required fee
  • Provide a vaccination certificate if the Act requires it.
  • Evidence of financial ability to pay tuition fees and anticipated living costs during the student's stay in the Republic. Bank statements, cash on hand, or traveller's checks should be used to demonstrate this.
  • Proof of medical cover
  • Cash deposit equal to the amount of the return ticket
  • An assurance from the relevant government that, in the case of African students, it will assume complete responsibility for the student and cover all expenses should it become essential to deport the student
  • Radiology and medical reports
  • For minors, an unabridged birth certificate.
  • In the case of a minor, the identity of the South African citizen who will serve as their guardian and a document confirming that guardianship.
  • Approval for your stay in South Africa from both parents, or approval from the only custodial parent and documentation of that custodial arrangement.
  • A formal letter from the school you plan to attend, confirming your provisional acceptance and the length of the course.
  • Per the Medical Schemes Act, a medical scheme's proof of medical coverage must be updated annually for the study duration.
  • If you are 18 years old, you must present a police clearance certificate from each nation where you have lived for a minimum of a year since turning 18. You need to submit this together with your application.

Duration & Fees

Duration
Study Visa must be given for the duration of the course that is registered for at a learning institution other than a school. Study permits for establishments classified as schools must be valid for the entire study period, as long as it does not surpass eight years for primary and six years for secondary schools.

Fees
Keep in mind that a fee is associated with issuing a visa; you should inquire about the price with the office since it is revised annually. Different currencies from different nations are required to pay the fee. For the Study Visa, the DHA Application Fee costs 425 ZAR, and the VFS Service Fee is 1,550 ZAR.

Extension

An extension for the Study Visa can be submitted only in South Africa. It must be sent at least 60 days before the current student visa reaches its expiry.
