Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), or the Science University of Malaysia, is a public research institute. It is also the second-largest University in Malaysia, right after the University of Malaya. It is spread over three campuses, including one main and two side campuses for medical and engineering. The Science University of Malaysia is the only APEX university in Malaysia. The APEX or Accelerated program for Excellence means that the government is backing the institution to become the leading University in the world.
Since its inception, the University has been expanding and developing. Now the Science University of Malaysia offers courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. It has also become a famous University internationally and locally. Since the beginning of USM, the University has opposed traditional faculty systems and favoured and implemented a school system. The uniqueness of the school system is that it has the capability to full fill the needs of a more focused degree. At the same time, students get the opportunity to explore other study areas offered by other schools. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that this school system would produce multi-skilled and trained graduates.
USM is home to over 24,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, making it one of Malaysia's most prominent institutions in terms of enrollment. There are approximately 1,479 professors, resulting in a student-lecturer ratio of approximately 19:1.
The Science University of Malaysia provides sporting facilities such as cricket, archery range, badminton courts, football fields, hockey grounds, tennis courts, squash courts, rugby fields and basketball courts. USM ground was used for the U/19 Cricket World Cup of 2008.
The Student Advisory and Development Unit of the University organizes several cultural activities, community service programs, leadership programs and excellence programs. These activities are realized through clubs, societies, cultural and sports activities and cultural activities, debate competitions and motivation workshops.
The University also arranges annual forums, programs, and workshops on National Days celebrations such as Merdeka Campus Walk, Ambang Merdeka Night, and religious activities such as Ramadan Appreciation Month in the holy month of Ramadhan and Quran Recitation.
On-Campus Housing includes a single or twin-sharing room, a communal restroom, a cafeteria, a laundry room, a sports facility, and a study area. Off-Campus Accommodation rents private housing within walking distance of campus and within a 3-kilometre radius. The facilities at these residences may include air-conditioning, a swimming pool and gymnasium, etc.
