Founded in 1973, UNL (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa) is the youngest public higher education institution with internationally recognized research and quality teaching. This institute has a strong tradition of work areas of innovation, with consistent outcomes in the services, economy and extracurricular activities, creating important protocols with its peers locally and internationally. It also participates in several mobility programs with European Higher Education Institutes. It collaborates with Portuguese-speaking countries, Brazil and Latin American countries.
The university has teaching units in Almada, Lisbon and Oeiras and Cascais. The nine academic units of the NOVA constitute an incontestable artistic, cultural, technological and academic resource. Academic Units of UNL involve their research and Teaching in Social Sciences, Science and Technology, Law, Economics and Management, Humanities, Medicine and Life Sciences, including Tropical and Public Health.

The Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, informally known as NOVA, has a student population of over 19,500. It is the only Portuguese institute with Student Council in its University bodies. Each school at the university has a respective Student Associations, which is its representative body. These associations are an essential part of university life; they actively promote activities that vary from cultural and pedagogic events, provision of services to the students and sports practices. Students get the chance to be a member of many clubs that exist at several schools.
NOVA Music Festival is an event that promotes Portuguese music by introducing the best emerging talents. It is the only and first event of its kind organized by any university in Portugal. UNL also intends to act as a cultural axis in Lisbon city and as a partner of cultural institutions by relating the cultural activities with the content of courses.
SASNOVA is the social welfare service of the university, which contributes to providing a top-notch academic experience to the university students and promotes the practice of sports by practising and stimulating sports activities. It also reinforces the university's image through various sports, including surf, tennis, korfball, padel, basketball, target archery and athletics.
The Social Welfare Services (SASNOVA) operate 3 residential halls with 460 beds for UNL students. Priority is given to students having Portuguese scholarships and International students in exchange programs.
