University of Oulu

ABOUT

Situated in Oulu, the University of Oulu is an international research institute. The university was started in 1958 after being promoted by the Oulu college association. At that time, it offered studies in the faculty of philosophy and technology. As for now, it provides education in eight faculties, including Education, Humanities, IT and Business. Furthermore, this university has 21 international master's programmes available.

The University of Oulu has two campus areas. These include the main campus in Linnanmaa, which includes six faculties. The other one is Kontinkangas Campus.

They have numerous research units and shared locations. These include:

  • Kajaani University Consortium
  • Martti Ahtisaari Institute

  • Juha Sipilä (former Prime Minister of Finland)
  • Jarkko Oikarinen (Developer of Internet Relay Chat)
  • Vuokko Hirvonen (author, professor and scholar of Sámi literature and educational policies)

STUDENTS

The University has over 13,000 students in different programs. Most of the students are Finnish, but there are also many international students.

International students account for around 6% of the student body. The institution participates in several international exchange programmes for academic personnel and students.

ACCOMMODATION

The largest provider of dorms for students in Oulu is the Student Housing Foundation of Northern Finland (also known as PSOAS). PSOAS housing is a viable option if you are looking for accommodation. It offers student apartments and family apartments to over 5,000 students. Because of the organisation's foundation-based business model, students can rent apartments at reasonable prices. But if you cannot secure residence there, you may look for other private options within the city.

In the heart of Oulu, the brand-new Aurora residence for international students was constructed next to the PSOAS housing office. The structure was completed in the 2013 spring.
