If you wish to visit your family in South Korea, you need to apply for a Family Visit Visa. You can do so if you are:

  • the spouse of a South Korean citizen.
  • dependent of a temporary or permanent South Korean resident.
  • intending to stay with a South Korean relative.

Is South Korea visa easy to get?

Eligibility

Certain countries are exempted from requiring a visa. These include EU countries, Canada, Australia and the United States. The citizens can visit for short-term. Their duration of stay may vary from 30-180 days based on their nationality.

To be eligible, you must be financially able to support yourself during your visit. Further, you must be a relative or dependent of a South Korean permanent or temporary resident or citizen.

Documents

All applicants are requested to submit the following documents.

  • Passport (valid for at least six months.
  • Application Form (filled in personally by the applicant).
  • Letter of invitation
  • Other documents explaining the purpose of entry.
  • Latest passport-size coloured photograph.
  • Consent to Quarantine
  • Job Certificate/ Recommendation Letter.
  • Bank Statement for the previous six months.
  • Marriage Certificate (in case of marriage with Korean), family relationship paper etc.

Process

You'll need to apply by filling in the online South Korean Family Visa form. Then pay the due fees. Ensure that you've compiled all the required documents. After that wait for your South Korea Visa Issuance confirmation.

Visa Processing Time
The visa takes roughly two weeks but can take more.

When to Apply
Make the embassy visa appointment well in advance of your desired travel date to South Korea. It's because processing can take up to several weeks. Apply at the latest 15 days before you intend to go, but no earlier than three months.

  • Multiple-entry visa - Fee: 90 USD

Extension

Exceeding your authorized stay or not possessing a valid visa may result in detention and fines. It is recommended to apply at least four months before your visa expires. In the event of an overstay, apply for a visa extension from the Korea Immigration Service (KIS) before attempting to leave the country. Also, consult with KIS regarding changes in the visa category.
