ABOUT

Before starting your journey to Sweden, you must have received a residence permit. Suppose you are going to work for longer than three months, starting up and running your own business or becoming a part-owner of a company. In that case, you need to have a residence permit. You can apply online from anywhere in the world, including your home country and any other country where you live outside of Sweden.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must;

  • be self-employed.
  • have proof that you can invest.

Documents

To apply for a residence permit to start up your own business, you must:

  • have a valid passport.
  • demonstrate that you have a lot of industry experience and have run your own business. 
  • show that you are fluent in Swedish, English or both.
  • provide evidence that you are the person who is running the company, have executive responsibility and own at least 50 per cent of the company.
  • your company's services or goods must be produced and sold or both in Sweden.
  • proof that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and any accompanying family members for the first two years. The equivalent of 200,000 SEK for you, 50,000 SEK for each accompanying child and 100,000 SEK for your accompanying wife/husband. 
  • present your budget's supporting documentation reasonably. 
  • have built a customer base and a network in Sweden.
  • show that after the trial period of two years, your company's finances are in balance and that you can support yourself and any family members.

Process

Self-employed individuals who plan to work in Sweden for less than three months do not require a residence permit. Some countries' citizens require a visa for work that lasts less than three months.

When to Apply
There is no specific time to apply for residence. But, you should realize the processing time and proceed accordingly.

Visa Processing Time
After you receive your decision, it could take up to four weeks for the card to be manufactured and delivered to the Embassy or Consulate-General. The residence permit card must include a valid passport when entering Sweden.

How to Apply
If you apply online, you will receive detailed instructions on completing your application and what documents you must submit. 

If you can't apply online, fill out the form Application for a Swedish residence permit for self-employed persons, 124011, and send it to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in your home country.

Duration & Fees

Duration
You must stay in Sweden for one year when applying for this visa. Self-employed individuals who plan to work in Sweden for less than three months do not require a residence permit.

Fees
Resident Permit for Self Employed in Sweden costs 2,000 SEK.

Extension

You can apply for a permit extension online. Apply no sooner than 30 days before the expiration of your current permit. Apply for a permanent residence permit and an extended residence permit at the same time.
