Delay in Changes to Canada's Citizenship Laws Until August 2024

United kingdom, United state

#citizenship

Changes to Canada’s first-generation limit (FGL) rule for citizenship have been delayed until August 9, 2024. The FGL rule prevents children born abroad to Canadian parents also born abroad from automatically receiving citizenship.

The Ontario Supreme Court deemed this unconstitutional, initially setting a deadline of June 19, 2024, for amendments. However, an extension was granted, with a possible further extension to December 2024. Bill C-71 aims to amend the Citizenship Act to address this issue.

Interim measures now allow some affected individuals to receive citizenship through urgent processing. The House of Commons' summer break may delay final changes until December 2024.

Australia granted visas to 12,600 Vietnamese students in the last 10 months, the lowest approval rate in 18 years at 78.7%. This is only the second time since 2005 that the rate has fallen below 80%.

The most rejections were for vocational and English language courses, with approval rates at 46.8% and 48.4%. Undergraduate and postgraduate approval rates remained high at 90-100%.

Australia has tightened immigration policies, including higher financial proof and English requirements, and limiting part-time work. Despite stricter rules, Vietnam remains a key market for Australian schools due to its high-achieving students.
