About

The University of Minho is presently one of the most prominent higher education institutions in Portugal and is progressively becoming more famous internationally. The University originated in 1973, and at present, it comprises three campuses: the Couros Campi and Azurém, in Guimarães and  Gualtar Campus, in Braga,

Initiated in 1973, the University of Minho accepted its first students in the academic year of 1975/76. At present, the University is prominent for its quality and competence of teaching staff, a wide range of graduate and undergraduate courses offered, excellence in scientific research and for its high level of collaboration with other institutions.

The basic structures of UMinho are the teaching and research units in the field of Engineering, Arts and Humanities, Education, Social Sciences, Law, Economics and Management, Nursing, Health Sciences, Psychology and Architecture. It is a research institute devoted to valorization and focused on the socio-economic environment, with several successful partnerships. The University further created a set of interfaces that support knowledge transfer and generate entrepreneurial dynamics.

Students

UMinho has a total of 19,643 students as of 2020, of which almost 13,000 are undergraduates, 4910 postgraduates and 1700 doctoral students.

AAUM is the students' union of the University of Minho, which students manage. It was created in 1977 to cater to and represent students' needs in the University. This association was second in Portugal, considered an institution of public interest by the Portuguese State. AAUM has several departments: IT, cultural, administrative, sports, leisure, and career prospects, among others. The union aims to help students and organizes several events like concerts, theatre and cinema sessions, and exhibitions.

Cultural Units at the University of Minho carry out various cultural activities. These units deliver essential support to the community, offering services, support and specialized consultancy, and they are also interlocutors in cultivating the progress of humanistic and art values.

Sports Complex at UMinho offers 70 different sports and 150 cultural, sports and leisure events and organizations. This University is an institution of sports winners who are awarded yearly medals in various sports.

Accommodation

This institute offer accommodation to students in their Residence Halls. The University of Minho's residential hall has a capacity of 1389 beds, 542 of which are in Guimarães and 847 in Braga. UMinho gives priority to students under SASUM scholarships and students facing financial difficulties.
