If you wish to work in Ireland, you need to have an Employment Permit issued by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE). Once you have acquired your this visa from the Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, you may apply for Employment (permits, etc.) Visa (DETE). DETE issues various employment permits, including Critical Skills Employment Permits and Work Permits. 

DETE will soon issue a new set of employment permits. Employment (permits, etc.) Visa is the correct visa type for a bearer of any DETE employment permit.

Eligibility

You will need to fill in the following criteria to be eligible:

  • You must have a signed application letter.
  • You must have an employment permit.
  • Contract of employment with a place of work in the state.
  • Evidence of qualifications.
  • You must prove to be financially stable.

Documents

Documents required include:

  • Two passport-sized colour photographs that are no older than six months.
  • Your current passport, as well as a complete copy of all past passports.
  • A signed application letter outlining your reasons for visiting Ireland. 
  • Proof that you have a place to stay in Ireland.
  • Permit to work from the Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment.
  • The visa application must be accompanied by proof of qualifications and prior work experience. For instance, your three most recent payslips, personal tax statements and regular payments to your bank account.
  • You must provide an up-to-date bank statement that shows how much money has been given into and out of the account in the last six months—also sufficient funds to cover your costs.
  • Medical and travel insurance.

Process

Answer all questions in AVATS fully and honestly. After completing the online application, you must follow the directions on the overview application form generated by the online system. The summary form will include instructions on where to send your supporting documentation. 

The summary form must be printed, signed, and dated before being submitted with your supporting documents. You may be asked to provide biometric information.

Processing times can vary between countries. They can also vary during high volume periods during the year. However, you can generally expect a decision within eight weeks from when your application is lodged at the visa office, embassy or consulate.

Duration
The Long Stay 'D' Employment Visa allows you to work for two years but can be extended for another three.

Fees
The fees for visas are:

  • Single entry - Fee: €60
  • Multi entry - Fee: €100
  • Transit - Fee: €25

The visa fee is an administrative fee that covers the costs associated with processing your application. You may require to pay additional fees, such as those associated with submitting your documents. Note that the fee is non-refundable.

Extension

The employment permits are usually issued for two years at the start; however, they can be extended for up to 5 years. After that, you can even apply for permanent residency in Ireland.
