About

A long-term visa is required if you wish to study in Ireland. If you intend to stay in Ireland for more than three months to pursue a course of study, you can apply for Long Stay ‘D’ Study Visa. 

Eligibility

Following is the eligibility criteria for students applying for Long Stay ‘D’ Study Visa.

  • Students enrolled in Degree Programme courses will be asked to show academic progress, i.e. progression to the next year of the study, to keep their permission. 
  • They must prove that they have paid their school/course college fees in full. 
  • These students receive any state benefits; students must arrange their educational programme to fit within the seven-year timeframe.
  • Those who wish to get this visa need to note that they may not transfer from the Degree Program to the Language and Non-Degree Program. 
  • There is a need to show proof of current private medical insurance, such as a renewal letter, for the prior registration period.

Documents

The documents required for this visa are: 

  • Application Summary document
  • Letter of application
  • Two passport-sized colour photographs that are no older than six months.
  • Your current passport and a complete copy of all previous passports. 
  • Evidence of enrollment in a privately funded course.
  • Evidence addressing any gap that exists in your academic background. 
  • Proof of payment of college fees.
  • Proof that you have enough academic ability to complete your chosen course. 
  • Proof of your English proficiency (or Irish).

  • Previous Visa Refusals

Process

You must apply online for a visa.

  • First, fill out the online application. Following that, the online system will generate a summary application form. 
  • Comply with the directions on the summary application form. This form will include instructions for submitting your supporting documentation. 
  • Next print this summary, it must be signed, and dated before being submitted with your supporting documents.

They may ask you to provide your biometrics information as part of the application process.

When to Apply
You may apply for this visa three months before your trip to Ireland.

Visa Processing Time
Processing times depend on each country's visa office, embassy, or consulate. They may also differ during high volume periods of the year. Expect a decision within eight weeks of submitting your application.

You can stay in Ireland for the duration of your studies.

Fees
The fees for visas are: 

  • Single entry - Fee: €60
  • Multi-entry - Fee: €100
  • Transit - Fee: €25

The visa fee is a processing fee that covers the costs of processing your application. This fee is non-refundable if your application is denied or withdrawn. 

Additional fees, such as those associated with submitting your documents, may be required. Additional fees and local payment options will be listed on the Visa Office/Embassy/Consulate's website. 

The visa fee is not required for all applicants.

Extension

Extension for this type of visa beyond your course duration is unusual. However, exceptional circumstances could lead to an extension.

Highlights

Work
Non-EEA students may work up to 20 hours per week during term time. But Non-EEA students may work up to 40 hours per week during regular college holiday periods.

Study
You can study for a course longer than three months with this visa. 

Business
You cannot conduct business or be self-employed.

Dependants
In general, students will continue to be denied the right to Family Reunification. The following are some exceptions to this general rule. For visa-required students, your husband, wife, civil partner, or child must submit their visa application, which will be judged on its merit.
