About

To come to Ireland to live with an Irish family member for more than three months, you need a Long Stay 'D' Join Family Visa if you are a visa-required national.

Eligibility

To make the journey to Ireland with an Irish spouse, a non-visa-required national doesn't even need a visa or preclearance. You must have the following to be eligible.

  • A signed letter of application providing details of the family member in Ireland who is sponsoring your application.
  • An eligible sponsor residing in Ireland and an Irish citizen.
  • A claimed genuine relationship such as a spouse, civil partner or child.
  • An employment permit holder.

Documents

You need to provide the following documents.

  • Two passport-sized colour photographs.
  • Your current passport and a complete copy of all previous passports. 
  • A signed application letter. 
  • You must provide proof of the alleged relationship. 
  • If you're under 18, you'll need a birth certificate or an adoption order. Also, a civil partnership or marriage certificate can be recognised under Irish law for other uses than immigration.  
  • A detailed bank account statement for the six months preceding your application. 
  • A statement of your sponsor's bank accounts for the six months preceding your application.

Process

You must apply for a visa online. After completing the online application, you must follow the directions stated on the summary application form generated by the online system. The summary form will include instructions on where to send your supporting documentation. 

The summary form must be printed, signed, and dated before being submitted with your supporting documents. Further, they may ask you to provide biometric information

When to Apply
Apply for this visa in Ireland alongside your family member or immediately after they arrive.

Visa Processing Time
Application processing is done in date order. You should not buy plane tickets until you know the result of your visa application. 

You can expect completion of your application process within six months of receiving all required documents.

You can stay for more than three months.

Fees
The fees for visas are:

  • Single entry - Fee: €60
  • Multi-entry: Fee: €100
  • Transit: €25

The visa fee is an administrative fee that covers the costs associated with processing your application. If your application is rejected , you will not get fee refund. 

You may be asked to pay additional fees, such as those associated with the submission of your documents. Details about additional fees and any local payment options will be available on the Consulate and Embassy's website.

Extension

Suppose you come to Ireland as a visitor, for example, on holiday or to visit family or friends. In that case, you need to leave Ireland before your visitor's permission expires. If your circumstances have changed since you arrived in Ireland, you can apply for a 90-day temporary extension of your visitor permission.

Reasons for application rejection
Rejection of application can be due to the following reasons:

  • There has been no change in circumstances since you arrived in Ireland. 
  • There is no change in situation since you were given a travel visa. 
  • You've travelled to Ireland to seek medical treatment. 
  • You are looking for a marriage licence in Ireland. 
  • You've come to Ireland to provide childcare services. 
  • You plan to spend your whole time in Ireland.
