About

The Japan Marriage Visa is a long-term visa. This visa allows the visa holder to reside in Japan if they're married to a Japanese citizen.

Eligibility

A Japanese Marriage Visa will be issued to an applicant when they meet all of the following requirements, also if the issuance is appropriate.

  • The applicant possesses a valid passport and is entitled to re-entry to a country of their nationality or a country of their residence.
  • All submitted documents are authentic, completed and satisfactory.
  • The activities to be engaged in Japan/ the civil status or the position of the applicant/ the period of stay meets the requirements for the status of residence and the period of stay stipulated in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. (Cabinet Order No.319 of 1951. After this, referred to as the "Immigration Control Act")
  • The applicant does not fall under any of the items of Article 5, Paragraph 1 of the Immigration Control Act.

The documents required for this visa include

  • Passport
  • Certificate of Eligibility
  • Evidence of Marriage
  • Japanese Marriage Visa Application Form.
  • Pictures
  • Documents detailing job description, salary etc.
  • Evidence of previous academic and professional history.
  • Any additional documents the embassy or consulate requires.

Process

The application process has two main parts.

  • Obtaining a certificate of eligibility
  • Applying for the visa

Visa Processing Time
The actual Japan Work Visa processing time ranges from 5 to 10 days. Even though the exact time varies depending on which office you apply to. But getting the Certificate of Eligibility can take up to 3 months.

Duration & Fees

Duration
The visa duration is usually either 1 year or 3 years. However, you can apply for an extension if you have valid reasons.

Fees
A single-entry visa costs around 3,000 yen, while a double-entry or multiple-entry visa costs around 6,000 yen. Pay fees in the currency of the country (region) where the Embassy / Consulate General is located. 

They may not ask for fees or may ask for a different amount. It will base on the objective of your visit and your nationality. 

Suppose the visa application is submitted through an approved agency by the Japanese Embassy / Consulate General. In that case, pay the processing fees and visa issuance fees. There are no fees if the visa is not issued.

Extension

To apply for an extension, you must apply for a Japan Visa Extension with the proper documents. These documents must include a signed Extension of Period of Stay application form.

Residence
After some time (usually a minimum of three years), a spouse may apply for a residency permit, which is valid for an indefinite period.

Divorce
Suppose the holder of a spouse visa divorces. In that case, the spouse visa is cancelled, and any application for a re-entry permit will be denied.

Citizenship
Long-term residents can apply for citizenship. However, the conditions are strict (usually requiring many years of constant residency and varying depending on the applicant's nationality).
