About

The Japanese Student (study) Visa is a long-term visa. It allows holders to attend educational institutions or universities in Japan. Certain countries are exempt from short-stay visas. However, for visas that are for longer than 90 days, you will need to apply for a visa.

Eligibility

A Japanese visa will be issued to an applicant when they meet all of the following requirements and if the issuance is considered appropriate.

  • The applicant possesses a valid passport. They are entitled to re-entry to a country of their nationality or a nation of their residence.
  • All submitted documents are authentic, completed and satisfactory.
  • The activities to be engaged in Japan/ the civil status or the position of the applicant/ the period of stay meets the requirements for the status of residence and the period of stay stipulated in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. (Cabinet Order No.319 of 1951. After this, referred to as the "Immigration Control Act")
  • The applicant does not fall under any of the items of Article 5, Paragraph 1 of the Immigration Control Act.
  • They must be financially able to support themselves for their stay.

Documents

The required document differs depending on the nationality, travel purpose etc., of the applicant. For details, you can refer to your local Japanese Embassy or Consulate-General website. The following documents are required:

  • Passport
  • Visa Application Form
  • Photographs
  • Letter of Admission
  • Letter of Invitation from Educational Institution.
  • Certificate of Eligibility
  • Schedule of Stay
  • Letter of Guarantee from Educational Institution.

Process

The application process has two main parts.

  • Obtaining a certificate of eligibility
  • Applying for the Student Visa

Visa Processing Time
The processing time for the actual Japan Student Visa is between 5 to 10 working days (although the exact time depends on the specific office in which you apply). But getting the Certificate of Eligibility can take up to 3 months.

Duration & Fees

Duration
The visas duration is usually for either:

  • 6 months
  • 1 year
  • 1 year and 3 months
  • 2 years
  • 2 years and 3 months

Fees
Fees are paid in the currency of the country (region) where the Embassy or Consulate-General is located. Single-entry visas cost around 3,000 yen, while double-entry or multiple-entry visas cost about 6,000 yen. 

Fees may or may not be required, based on your visit's objective and nationality. 

Suppose the visa application is submitted through an approved agency by the Japanese Embassy / Consulate General. In that case, pay the processing fees and visa issuance fees. You are not required to pay a fee if they decline your application.

Extension

You can apply for your visa extension before it expires, provided your reasons are valid. To apply for an extension, you must apply for a Japan Visa Extension with the proper documents. It should include an Extension of Period of Stay application form and your company's registration documents.

Highlights

Work
You cannot be employed with this visa unless you get a work permit. There are work-related restrictions as to what type of work you can do.

Study
You can study with this visa.

Re-entry Permit
You'll only require this permit if you stay outside of Japan for a while longer than a year.

Extension
This visa is extendable.
