Like most universities in Norway, the Oslo Metropolitan University is also the result of a merger between various colleges. It all started during the 90s and there is a history of improvement and mergers that eventually led to the present form university in 2018. The university is spread over four faculties, and various research institutes focused on expanding innovation in social sciences and work.

The university is home to about 20,000 students, both national and international. Norwegian is the primary language, but several programs are offered in English, French and German. Oslo Metropolitan University has over 40 different student organizations and societies. There are several other societies within Oslo city which are open to students. SiO Athletica offers several facilities and opportunities for students at the university. It runs six gyms and offers squash courts, a swimming pool, bouldering, tennis courts, artificial turf courts, climbing, and a training hall.
With cooperation with OSI (Sports Club for Students in Oslo), SiO offer more than 70 different recreational and athletic activities. It offers various swimming, dancing, yoga, tennis, martial arts courses etc.
Student Welfare Association (SiO) is responsible for arranging accommodations for students. You are required to apply online for the residence. At Oslo Metropolitan University, there are dozens of student villages. The most popular student villages among OsloMet’s international students are St. Hanshaugen, Sogn, and Kringsja. Among these residences, Kringsja and Sogn are a bit away from the city's centre. Still, there is well-connected public transport on the doorstep. Compared to other housing options, these two are the least expensive. You can also look for a private residence in the city.
