It is for those students who will be working as trainees in Norway.

Researchers with own funds
This Residence Permit is for researchers without a Norwegian employer who must conduct research in Norway.

The conditions and application process may differ, but the basic requirements are the same.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must:

  • be invited to the country by a research institute.
  • support yourself financially and have a residence arranged in the country.

Documents

Following are the required documents you need when applying first time for this permit.

  • Passport and a duplicate of each page that has been used. 
  • A Cover letter is signed from the application portal, signed (or application form). 
  • Two recent, white-background, passport-size photos.
  • An invitation from or an agreement with the research institution with a more detailed description of your research tasks.
  • Documentation of financial maintenance.
  • Documents which show that you have somewhere to live in Norway.
  • Overview of previous studies and work.

Process

Bring all the required documents with you. After you register your application in the Application Portal, an email is sent to you with a link to the checklist.

When to Apply
You should apply a few months before you are planning on moving to Norway.

Visa Processing Time
Processing time depends upon the availability of documents. It is usually completed within a month. It can take longer, up to several months in some cases.

How to Apply
The process of application is online. You should apply online, submit your documents as per instructions and wait for the decision.

This permit is valid for two years.

Fees
Residence Permit for Vocational Training and Research for may cost up to 5,400 NOK.

Extension

You can apply to extend it for another two years before it expires. Then, after 3 years of continuous presence in Norway, you can apply for an indefinite-term Permanent Residence Permit.
