Medical Treatment for Non-EU/EEA Nationals Norway

About

Apply for residence permit beforehand if you intend to travel to Norway for medical treatment for a duration longer than 90 days. Such a residence permit may also be given to a companion if you require one. These residency permits can only be issued for a maximum of one year.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible, you must;

  • have been given a medical treatment offer from a facility in Norway. 
  • use your own money or government funds from your home country to cover the cost of the medical care. 
  • The hospital or outpatient facility must attest that your treatment won't result in patients in Norway receiving less adequate medical care. 
  • You cannot be barred from entering either Norway or the Schengen area
  • The course of treatment cannot be expected to last longer than a year.
  • It must be likely that you will leave Norway when your residence permit expires.

Documents

Print out the checklist and gather the necessary documents.

  • Your passport and also copies of all pages that have been used in it.
  • A written offer of medical treatment from a treatment institution, stating the agreed price, how long the treatment is expected to last and what type of treatment you will receive in Norway, and any necessary medical follow-up.
  • A written agreement with the treatment institution that shows that the treatment will be financed by private means or public funds from your home country, for example, a deposit, bank guarantee, insurance or confirmation from the authorities in your home country.
  • Documentation that you have enough money to live on while you are staying in Norway.
  • Documents that you have a place to live while you are staying in Norway.
  • Confirmation from the treatment institution stating that the treatment will not be given to the disadvantage of patients resident in Norway.

Process

When to Apply
Be mindful of the visa processing time and apply accordingly. Moreover, try to apply to be in the safe zone as soon as possible.

Visa Processing Time
The processing of medical care for residents of nations outside the EU/EEA region may take a few days. It can be delayed if not provided with proper documents, so be careful with that.

How to Apply
Please visit one of the VFS Visa Application Centers in your nation to submit the documents listed on the checklist. VFS will, directly or indirectly, send your application to UDI, where it will be processed.

Duration
The visa is provided for more than 90 days, but the duration does not exceed a year.

Fees
The applications are received by an external service provider, VFS Global, which charges a service fee of 30 EUR.

Extension

The visa is valid for a year; if more time is required, you may apply for extension.
