Tohoku University, founded in 1907, was Japan's third Imperial national university. Located on the historical site of Aoba Castle in Sendai City, the university is proud to be ranked among Japan's top institutes. It has a unique global network which is comprised of academic exchange agreements with several top educational institutes around the globe. This university also has the title of the first Japanese institute to accept female students.

It has become one of the best and most prominent institutes in Japan, with 16 Graduate Schools, 10 Faculties, 6 Research Institutes, 3 Professional Graduate Schools and affiliated education research centres. Tohoku University has 16 overseas offices in 9 countries and has exchange agreements with 50 countries in 478 institutions.

By devoting itself to research, Tohoku University is solving societal problems and educating the community in leadership skills. It is one of the top research institutes in the country. According to Thomson Reuters, it is 4th best institute in the country. The university's research work focuses on the fields of Physics, Materials Sciences, Toxicology and Pharmacology, and Chemistry.

Students

The institute has a total student population of almost 18,000 students, of which over 10,000 are undergraduate students. There are about 1770 international students.

Sendai is an exciting place to experience the rich culture of northern Japan. The Student Friendship Association is an organization consisting of 24 cultural clubs and 47 sports. It also provides facilities for extracurricular activities.

At Tohoku University, students have ample opportunities to get an excellent education and interact with other students. It has more than 60 cultural and athletic clubs; students get opportunities to meet people with similar interests and develop long-lasting friendships during their stay in Japan.

Accommodation

This university offers 2 types of residential spaces for international students: In University House, international students live with local students, and International House, which is entirely for international researchers/students. The eligibility for residences varies depending on the type of living spaces available.

Dorms of university are in 4 locations in Nagamachi, Katahira, Aobayama and Sanjo. These residences are very convenient and helpful. The best living spaces are at University House Aobayama, which was opened recently. It is the best living space for those who have classes in Aobayama. This institute provides full support to the students looking for off-campus residences.
