The German Family Reunion Visa is a German long-stay visa. It is issued to bring family members of German residents to Germany. 

The citizen of third-country who is legally residing in Germany can bring their non-German family members who live outside the European Union, whether permanent or temporary. Non-EU citizens can apply for it. 

If a citizen of the European Free Trade Association, European Economic Area or  European Union wishes to join their family in Germany, they must be financially self-sufficient. They are not needed to acquire a Work Permit or a Residence Permit to work.

Eligibility

Read below to know who is eligible to come to Germany on Family Reunion Visa. 

Parent 
If a minor from a third-world country is a resident of Germany, his biological or adoptive parents are granted a residence permit to join the minor.

Spouse 
If you want to bring a registered partner or spouse to Germany, you need to get a Spouse Visa. For that, you both should be older than 18. The immigrating spouse or registered partner must also have essential German language capability. Moreover, the German resident should be able to finance their spouse or partner. 

As for applicants in polygamous marriages, if the sponsor already lives in Germany with a spouse or registered partner, no other spouse or partner shall be granted a visa to join them. 

Adult Children
The candidate must not be married if they wish to bring their adult children to Germany.

Minor Children
Parents of minor children legally residing in Germany can apply to have their child join them if they have custody and care of the child.

Other Relatives
Immediate family members and other relatives can also join you. Such as:

  • Siblings
  • Aunt
  • Uncle
  • Nephew 
  • Niece
  • Cousins
  • Grandparents

Typically, these visas are more difficult to obtain. And these are issued primarily to avoid some form of hardship.

Documents

Documents which are required are as follows.

  • Passport 
  • Two application forms 
  • Travel booking. It is a booked ticket from your homeland to Germany.
  • A Travel Health Insurance
  • Proof of financial source
  • Invitation letter 
  • Proof of Accommodation 
  • Evidence of German language skills at least level A1 of the applicant.

All documents should be submitted in German or English. If the documents are in your native language, you must provide a legalised and attested translation for each one.

Process

To begin, see if the German embassy in your home country has a checklist of the required documents for the German family reunification visa on their website. If not, send the list to yourself via email. Start collecting the required documents once you have them in your hands. 

Schedule a meeting with the German embassy or consulate.

When to Apply
It is recommended to apply three months before the trip.

Visa Processing Time
Depending on your situation, processing can take a few weeks to several months. If the embassy has received a more significant number of applications, expect a delay in your appointment. However, if the number of applications is small, you will receive them within a few days.

Duration & Fees

Duration
This visa has a period longer than three months.

Fees
A long-term family reunion visa (category D) costs 75 euros for adults. Furthermore, the fee is 37 euros for children under 18. Fees are non-refundable. 

Extension

It is unusual for the validity of visas to be extended and is only done under exceptional cases. Only a foreign authority in Germany can do it that cover the place of residence of the tourist or visa owner.
