About

This visa allows relatives and spouses to join individuals residing in Portugal. The owner of a residence permit in Portugal has the right to bring along his or her immediate family. These include the spouse or common-law spouse, children, parents, or siblings who depend on either spouse.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this visa, you must be one of the following relatives of the owner of the residence permit in Portugal.

  • Spouse
  • Partner
  • Minor children
  • Guardian children
  • Minor siblings

If the Portuguese resident is a holder of a Student Visa, they can only sponsor their partner or minor children.

Documents

The documents required for this visa are as follows.

  • A valid passport 
  • Certificate proving family relationship
  • Birth certificate
  • Adoption files if the visitor is adopted
  • Passport size pictures
  • Evidence of financial funds
  • Acceptable criminal records
  • A document authorising the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) to check your criminal history in Portugal.
  • Health insurance
  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal

Submit documents in either English or Portuguese. Get them translated by a certified translator.

Process

Your sponsor will initially need to apply at SEF before the visitor can apply at a local embassy. The SEF review the application for 60 days after the initial process, prepare the required documents and schedule an embassy appointment.

When to Apply
It is recommended to apply as early as possible—three months before your trip to Portugal. Thus, it will help to avoid any delays in the issuance of your visa.

Visa Processing Time
The processing time is a minimum of 2 weeks but can take more time depending on the circumstances.

Duration & Fees

Duration
This visa is valid as long as the sponsor has a valid residency permit. However, if a couple has been married for five years, then the initial resident permit is valid for 2 years, after which an autonomous visa is given that stays valid for 3 years. Also, it can be renewed.

Fees
The cost of the entry visa issued by the Portuguese Embassy is €90. However, the fee may be different based on your nationality. The application fee for the residence permit is €83, and it is €72 to receive the residence permit for work from the SEF.

Extension

The visa can be extended every three years after the initial period of validity which is two years. It is essential to do so before the visa's validity expires.
