Work Visa Portugal

About

If you are a non-EU national wishing to seek employment in Portugal, you will have to apply for a Portugal Work Visa.

You can apply for a Work Visa if you meet the requirements for any of the following jobs.

  • Subordinate seasonal work
  • Independent work
  • Highly qualified activity
  • Professorial activity

You are permitted to work and study if you want to join a family member who resides in Portugal. However, you might need to request permission to work, so you should get in touch with the SEF.

You may apply for Portuguese citizenship if you have been a permanent or temporary resident of Portugal for at least six years. You must be fluent in Portuguese and connected to the Portuguese-speaking community.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Work Visa, the individual must have:

  • a job offer from a Portuguese company or organisation. The organisation must have a job opening for at least a month.
  • to apply for a Work Permit on the traveller's behalf, they need to apply to the Portuguese Labor Authorities.
  • a valid passport
  • adequate funds

Documents

The documents required for this visa are as follows.

  • a valid passport
  • passport size pictures
  • evidence of financial funds
  • criminal history check
  • a document authorising the SEF to check your criminal history in Portugal.
  • health insurance
  • proof of accommodation in Portugal
  • employment contract

Translate documents in either Portuguese or English before submitting. Otherwise, they must be translated by a certified translator.

Process

After receiving the job offer, your employer will apply for the Work Permit. Once you get it, you will apply for a Work Visa at the Portuguese embassy. After arrival in Portugal, you will have to apply for a residence permit.

When to Apply
We recommend submitting your application as early as possible—three months before your trip to Portugal—to avoid delays in issuing your visa.

Visa Processing Time
The processing time is a minimum of 2 weeks but can take more time depending on the circumstances.

Duration & Fees

Duration
After receiving a Work Visa, you will get a Work Permit, allowing you to live and work in Portugal for one or two years. It can be renewed as long as you do it before it expires and has a job offer from your employer.

Fees
The cost of the entry visa issued by the Portuguese Embassy is €90. However, it may change based on your nationality. The application fee for the residence permit is €83 and the fee to receive the residence permit for work from the SEF is €72.

Extension

The Portugal visa can be extended, but there needs to be a legitimate reason for the extension. If you are on a Work Visa, you will have to apply for a renewal of your residence permit, not a visa extension.
