If you are travelling to a non-EU/EAA country, and your place has to stop at one of the Portuguese airports, you will need an airport transit visa for Portugal. Generally, an airport transit visa is valid for 24 hours.

Eligibility

Not all nationals of countries under the Schengen Visa regime will require this visa to stop over. Check whether your country is on the list of countries that need a Portugal Airport Transit Visa.

Documents

The documents required for this visa are as follows.

  • A valid passport 
  • Passport size pictures
  • Evidence of financial funds
  • Acceptable criminal records
  • Return ticket
  • Original and photocopy of Seaman's book (this is needed only for seafarers)
  • A document authorising the SEF to check your criminal history in Portugal.
  • Health insurance
  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal
  • Employment contract

You need to submit the documents in either English or Portuguese. Otherwise, they must be translated by a certified translator.

Process

When to Apply
We recommend you apply as soon as possible—three months before your trip to Portugal—so your visa won't be issued late.

The processing time is a minimum of 2 weeks but can take more time depending on the circumstances.

The Airport Transit Visa is only valid for 24 hours in a Schengen airport's international transit area.

Fees
The cost of the entry visa issued by the Portuguese Embassy is €90; however, it may change based on your nationality. The application fee for the residence permit is €83 and the fee to receive the residence permit for work from the SEF is €72.

Extension

The visa cannot typically be extended. However, a brief extension might be possible depending on the situation.
