Portugal is one of the top destinations for retirees. Its beautiful scenery attracts people across the world for recreational activities. To spend your retirement in Portugal, you need a Portugal Retirement Visa, also known as Portugal's National D7 Visa.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this visa, you need to:

  • be a non-EU citizen
  • have an acceptably clean criminal record
  • have an adequate passive income
  • show proof of accommodation 
  • have sufficient funds
  • be willing to spend 16 months in Portugal during your initial 2 years of relocating.

Documents

The documents required for this visa are as follows.

  • A valid passport 
  • D7 visa application form
  • Proof of passive income
  • Passport size pictures
  • Evidence of financial funds
  • Acceptable criminal records
  • Document authorising the The Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) to check your criminal history in Portugal.
  • Health insurance
  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal
  • Cover letter with reason for the request

Submit documents in either English or Portuguese. Further, they must be translated by a certified translator.

Process

To apply, assemble the required documents and contact the embassy where you will submit the visa application form and make an appointment. You will then pay the application fee and wait for your request to be processed.

When to Apply
We suggest submitting your application as soon as possible—three months before your trip to Portugal. It will help to avoid any delays in the granting of your visa.

The processing time is a minimum of 2 weeks but can take more time depending on the circumstances.

Duration & Fees

Duration
The residence permit for retirement in Portugal is valid for only one year; however, it can be renewed twice up to a maximum of five years. After five years, you can apply for permanent residency if you are eligible.

Fees
The cost of the entry visa issued by the Portuguese Embassy is €90; however, it may change based on your nationality. The application fee for the residence permit is €83 and the fee to receive the residence permit for work from The Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) is €72.

Extension

You can get an extension after the initial one-year period. The extension granted is for two years; you get it twice, adding up to a total of 5 years. After this, if you meet other requirements, you are eligible for permanent residency.
