Portugal is a dream destination for digital nomads because of its low-cost lifestyle, desirable weather conditions, vast workspaces and connections with other important European countries. Portugal recently introduced its digital nomad visa for remote workers and released the requirements to apply. Interested foreign nationals can apply for this digital nomad visa after 30th October according to the latest requirements.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for Portugal's D7 or digital nomad visa are simple and different from the regular Work visa for Portugal. Remote workers earning four times their national minimum wage can apply for a remote work visa for Portugal. This income reaches approximately $2,750 per month. Also, the willing person must have 

  • Clean criminal record
  • Nationally authorized documents
  • Health insurance
  • Health condition meeting the official requirements

Documents

Required documents for a digital nomad visa for Portugal include the following;

  • A D7 visa application form
  • A valid passport
  • Two passport-size photos
  • Evidence to show the regular or passive income that is known as proof of sufficient funds
  • If necessary, there should be proof of having legal residence in the USA
  • Clean criminal record certificate
  • Evidence of health coverage 
  • Proofs of accommodation in Portugal
  • A cover letter indicating the reason for the application request

Process

When to Apply
Visa processing takes 3 to 4 months, so you need to apply at least four months before you have to enter Portugal. According to the latest updates, interested candidates can apply after 30th October 2022. 

How to Apply
There are two types of digital nomad visas for Portugal, short-stay visas and residence visas. However, the process includes the following steps:

  • Contact the relevant Portuguese embassy to collect the visa information.

  • Gather all the documents you will need for visa processing as any missing document can result in visa denial

  • Fill out the application form and submit it either physically or online (depending upon the policy of the related embassy) 

  • Submit the required documents, either via email or by physically visiting the Portuguese embassy

  • If all the documents are complete, and the application fee is thoroughly filled, the next step is visa processing

Visa Processing Time
Make sure that you submit all the required documents with a completely filled visa application form. In this case, it takes 3-4 months to complete the visa processing. But if there are some documents or application-related problems, it can cause visa delays.

Duration & Fees

Duration 
There are two types of digital nomad visas for Portugal;

  • Short stay visa, which is valid for one year and can be extended up to 2 years.
  • Residence permit, which allows the digital nomad to stay for more than one year in Portugal. The initial residence permit is valid for 4 months and you have to apply for a residence visa during this time.

Fees
For a digital nomad/D7 visa for Portugal, an applicant has to pay the application fee and the fee for an initial residence permit. The application fee is €180 and the initial residence permit fee is €320. 

Extension

Portuguese digital nomad visa is extendable and you have to apply for renewal of the visa before it gets expired. A temporary stay digital nomad visa can be extended up to two years.
