Family Sponsorship Canada

About

A Canadian resident may be able to sponsor certain relatives to immigrate to Canada under the Family Class. But the sponsor needs to be at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen. A person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or a permanent resident of Canada can also sponsor relatives.

What are your responsibilities as a sponsor?
A sponsor must sign an agreement promising to provide financial support for your spouse or partner's basic needs as well as their dependent children.

ELIGIBILITY

There is an eligibility criteria for both the person who sponsors and the one being sponsored. As for the one sponsoring, they must be:

  • Canadian citizen
  • A person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or permanent resident of Canada.
  • Sponsoring their spouse

Canadian citizens can sponsor family members only if they meet all of these conditions:

  • They’re related by blood or adoption.
  • Both their mother and father passed away.
  • They’re under 18 years of age.
  • They’re single (not married or in a common-law or conjugal relationship).

Who qualifies as a family member?

Father, mother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, spouse, child, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law are family members. A family member is an individual related to you by blood, adoption or marriage and lives in your home.

Documents

Other than the basic document, you need to provide the following documents as well while you apply for family sponsorship:

  • Identity documents from both sides
  • Sponsorship agreement and undertaking between both parties
  • The sponsor must demonstrate that they can support the new family member.
  • Documents for additional documents, if any.

Process

There are two stages to becoming a permanent resident for your eligible relatives. You must apply to sponsor your relatives, and they must apply for permanent residence. You must submit both your sponsorship application and your relative's permanent residence application at the same time.

When to Apply
The time by which you need to apply varies for countries. You should look for visa processing time for the country you are sponsoring a relative from and apply accordingly.

Visa Processing Time
Visa processing time may vary according to the country you are applying from. But typically, sponsorship applications take approximately a year to process, but this can take much longer depending on your case type.

How to Apply
The application process is online. Both the parties have to apply simultaneously and provide the necessary documents.
