An Employer-specific Work Permit lets you work under the terms of your work permit. These terms include the following:

  • The company's name for which you may work.
  • The length of time you may work for an employer.
  • The location where you may work may all be listed on the work permit (if applicable).

Can I change my employer on a work permit?

Employment permits are only valid for the employer and the job listed on the permit. If you want to change employers, you must apply for a new employment permit that meets the eligibility requirements for the type of permit you want.

ELIGIBILITY

When applying for a work permit, you must meet specific requirements based on where you are. However, irrespective of where you apply or which type of work permit you apply for, you must:

  • show an officer that you intend to leave Canada once your work permit expires.
  • have sufficient cash to support yourself and your dependents while in Canada and when you return home.
  • you obey the law, have no previous record of criminal activity, and you will not pose a security risk to Canada. They may request a provide police clearance certificate.
  • be in good physical health and, if necessary, have a medical check.

Give the officer any additional documents, if they request you, to prove your eligibility to enter the country.

DOCUMENTS

You must produce the following documents while applying for Employer-specific Work Permit.

  • Identity documents
  • The employment contract from the Canadian employer.
  • Proof showing you are medically fit.
  • Documents for family or spouse who might be travelling with you.

PROCESS

Due to COVID-19, most applicants must apply online for a work permit. You can only visit Canada if you are excluded from COVID-19 travel restrictions, even if your work permit application has been approved. You must be a fully vaccinated traveller in most cases.

Employer-specific work permits can cost you 155 CAD per applicant. If three workers apply together, you have to pay 465 CAD.

If your work permit expires when you're in Canada, you may apply for an extension.
