The Study Permit lets a foreign national study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. You need to apply for this permit before you travel to Canada.

Is a study permit a temporary resident visa in Canada? 

The Study Permit is not a temporary resident visa. It doesn't let you enter Canada. You may also need a Visitor Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). If they approve your Study Permit, they will also issue you a visitor visa. 

Is a Canada study permit difficult to get?

Obtaining a Study Permit in Canada is more difficult than you might think. According to the IRCC, approximately 30% of all these permit applications are denied.

ELIGIBILITY

You can study in Canada if you meet the following requirements: 

  • You must be a fully vaccinated traveller. 
  • You will follow the law, have a clean criminal record, and obtain a police certificate (if required).
  • Proof that you and family members who are accompanying you to Canada have enough cash to afford your living expenses, tuition and return transportation.
  • Your in good physical health and have a medical examination (if necessary) 
  • Ensure an officer that you will leave the country when your study permit expires.

Who can sponsor me to study in Canada?

A family member, relative, friend, or other third parties can sponsor you for a Canada student visa. They needs to write a letter stating that they will pay for your tuition and living expenses as proof of funds.

Documents

You need the following documents:

  • Identity documents
  • Proof of acceptance from a school or other institutions in Canada.
  • Prove your financial capability to support your stay and studies in Canada.
  • Provide a letter of explanation to the visa officer explaining your purpose and goals.
  • You may need a document called Certificat d'acceptation du Québec if you want to study for more than six months.

PROCESS

Apply online for a Study Permit even if you are outside Canada. If you can't apply online because of a disability or a problem with the online application, you can apply on paper.

When to Apply
Before coming to Canada, you must usually apply for this permit. From within Canada, a few people can apply for it. In certain cases, you can apply at the port of entry when you arrive in Canada. Be sure which options are available to you.

Visa Processing Time
Usually, this permit is created within 2-3 months. This time starts the day IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) receives your application.

DURATION & FEES

Duration
This permit requires you to have a visitor visa to come to the country. Generally, duration of this permit or visitor visa is six months. If your course is more than six months long, you may need to provide a document called Certificat d'acceptation du Québec (CAQ).

Fee
It costs you CAD 150 at the time of application. You need to pay more for the visitor visa or extension later.

EXTENSION

You'll need to prolong your permit to stay in Canada for longer. However, we recommend applying at least 30 days before the expiration date.
