Family Visa UK

About

You'll need a Family Visa to stay in the UK for over six months with a family member. The following relations are considered family members.

  • Parent
  • Spouse or partner
  • Fiancé, fiancée or a proposed civil partner
  • Child
  • Relative who is going to provide long-term care for you.

Other ways you can stay are:

  • If your partner has died or you are a victim of domestic violence.
  • Member of your family is in humanitarian protection or has refugee status. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for UK Family Visa, you must have a relative who is a British citizen or person based in the UK if you're looking for a temporary visit.

Apply as a partner or spouse
You and your partner should be at least 18 years old to apply as a couple. Also, your partner should either:

  • an Irish or British national.
  • have a Turkish Worker Visa or Turkish Businessperson Visa.
  • qualifies as a refugee or has humanitarian protection in the United Kingdom.
  • have a permanent residence in the United Kingdom. For example, they have settled status, indefinite leave to remain, or proof of permanent residence.
  • be citizens of the EU, Iceland, Switzerland, Iceland or Norway and have pre-settled status. They must have arrived in the UK before January 1, 2021.

After you apply, you and your partner must permanently plan to live together in the UK.

Apply as a parent
For taking care of your child, you can apply to live in the United Kingdom. If you are eligible to apply as a partner instead of a parent, you must do so either your child must: 

  • be under 18 on the date when you applied.
  • under the age of 18 since you were first given leave and not living independently.

You cannot apply for a Family Visa or switch to one in certain circumstances. For example, suppose a family member is temporarily on a Work or Student Visa. In that case, you cannot apply for this visa. Or, your visa is valid for six months or possess a Visitor Visa.

Documents

When you submit your application, you'll need to have some information and proof. Include information for yourself and any dependents who are also applying. You'll need to provide the following information: 

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Information about any criminal convictions. 
  • Copies of any visa or entry stamps and photo page on your all previous passport 
  • Information about any previous immigration applications you've filed.
  • Provide a biometric residence permit copy (if you have it).
  • Suppose you're applying from outside the UK. In that case, you'll need your national insurance number, your parents' date of birth, and your nationality. 
  • Submit tuberculosis test results if you are from a country where it is required.
  • A certified translation of those documents which are written in a language other than English or Welsh. 
  • If you're applying for a visa from outside the UK, you'll need a blank page in your passport. 

Depending on your circumstances, you may be required to submit additional documents, such as a sponsorship form from a family member in the United Kingdom. After that, When you apply, they will tell you how to submit your documents.

Fill out the online fee waiver request form if you are unable to pay the fee due to:

  • non-availability of place and affordability to bear its cost.
  • have a place, but you cannot bear living costs, including food, heating etc.
  • your income is too low to pay the fee; else, it may interfere with your child's wellbeing. 

When to Apply
Apply three months before your planned travel date.

Visa Processing Time
There are two types of services; standard service and super priority service. Lets see each one of them. So these services visa processing times are different. Lets look at each one.

1. Standard service
Expect a response within 12 weeks if applying from outside of the UK. If you apply from the UK, a response may come in 8 weeks.

2. Super priority service
When you use the super-priority service, you will almost always be given the following options: 

  • At the end of the next working day - if the appointment is on a weekday after providing biometric information.
  • In 2 working days - if the appointment is on the weekend after giving biometric information.

Duration & Fees

Duration
You can stay in the UK for two years and nine months. After that, you'll need to apply for an extension. And live for two years and six months if you prolong your Family Visa or switch to this one.

Fees
The cost is determined by how you apply, so lets look at each case and the respective applicable fees.

1. If you're joining your parent, partner or child
It costs £1,523 to apply outside the UK and £1,033 to apply within the UK. 

2. Cost for every dependent you add to your application
It costs £1,523 per person to apply outside the UK and £1,033 per person to apply within the UK. 

3. The cost of looking after an adult by a relative
It costs £3,250 to apply from outside the UK and £1,033 from within the UK. 

Suppose you apply to switch or extend in the UK. In that case, you'll need to pay £19.20 to have your biometric information (photo and fingerprints) taken.

Extension

You can extend your current stay in the UK before it expires. If you're extending your stay to be with the same family member, your recent stay will only be added to your new visa for up to 28 days.
