You can apply for a Fee Paying Student Visa to study full-time in New Zealand if you're from overseas. You'll need to pay the full cost of your courses and enrol with an approved education provider.

With this visa, you can study your course full-time. It includes schools, tertiary (study after secondary school) and English language study. 

Student Visa conditions require you to attend the place of study endorsed on your visa. If you want to bring your partner or children with you, they can apply for visas based on your relationship.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must:

  • be an overseas student.
  • got an invitation from an educational institute in New Zealand.
  • have enough money to pay your tuition unless you're exempt from paying it. 
  • You must have enough money to cover your living expenses while in New Zealand.
  • require full medical and travel insurance for the length of your stay.
  • have good health. 
  • show that you're passing your course and meeting your attendance requirements.
  • possess a ticket to leave New Zealand or be sponsored for the cost of your onward travel.
  • be nine or younger, and accompanied by your parent or legal guardian, unless you will live in an NZQA-approved school hostel.

Documents

You need to provide the following documents. 

  • A valid passport. 
  • Standard photographs for passports. 
  • An offer's confirmation from a place from an approved education provider.
  • Police clearance certificate.
  • Medical certificate. 
  • Medical and travel insurance.
  • English language proficiency test result. The recommended IELTS is 5.5 and above. 
  • Provide information about your holidays and your course.
  • You must have written permission to work if you're aged 16 or 17 or in years 12 or 13 of secondary school.
  • Bank statements and other documents that demonstrate your ability to support yourself. 
  • Receipts of payments. 
  • Evidence of onward travel or sufficient funds to purchase return transportation.
