About

The Malaysian government has recently introduced a digital nomad visa called DE Rantau Nomad Pass and the applications are being accepted from 1 October 2022. Contrary to the residence permit for Malaysia, which allows overseas to invest and get residence, this visa focuses on digital professionals who can serve the information technology industry in Malaysia.

Visa applications will be processed by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). Digital nomad pass is a multi-entry pass & divided into two types: local nomad pass and foreign nomad pass.

Eligibility

Foreign individuals who want to apply for a digital pass for Malaysia should have an annual income of $ 24,000. The interested nomads will also be required to meet the minimum annual salary requirements of the Malaysian government. Also, you are eligible for a digital nomad visa if you are fulfilling these conditions:

  • A digital freelancer/independent contractor having an active contract from a local or foreign company
  • A remote worker with an active job contract from a local or foreign company
  • Work with an IT industry - including digital marketing, digital content development or creative content
  • A clean criminal record
  • Enough of bank balance to meet the requirements 
  • Stable health condition and health insurance
  • Valid and nationally verified documents 

Documents

DE Rantau digital pass for Malaysia is a multi-entry visa that allows foreign nationals to visit and stay in Malaysia serving their digital technology. There are following documents required for visa application;

  • An application form for a digital nomad visa
  • A copy of the passport having at least  empty pages
  • A copy of active health insurance applicable in Malaysia
  • Evidence to show the financial state or proofs of funds, bank statement for the last three months and statement of yearly income
  • Proofs of doing the remote work, such as business license, clients, work contract etc
  • Proofs of personal information such as Birth certificate, resume of the applicant, academic credentials
  • Additional documents related to dependents if you are taking them with you

Process

When to Apply
Applicants are free to apply for a digital nomad visa after 1 October 2022. Also, you have to apply at least 2 months before you have to enter Malaysia.

How to Apply
For a DE Rantau digital nomad visa for Malaysia, you have to apply online. The steps are given as;

  • Reach the official website of DE Rantau digital nomad pass and sign up for an account. By giving your email and verifying the account, you will be registered on the site.

  • After choosing the profession (e.g. digital freelancer, remote worker or independent contractor) you will proceed to the application form

  • Fill out the application form completely and carefully by entering your personal details, passport details other required information.

  • Then upload the digital copies of all the documents and the documents must be translated into the English language.

  • In the last step, pay the visa fee and wait for visa processing

Visa Processing Time
It normally takes up to 4 weeks for visa processing. But if there are some missing or wrong documents, it can cause visa delays.

Duration & Fees

Duration
DE Rantau digital pass is issued for one year and then can be renewed for another year. 

Fees
Digital nomad visa fees are 1,000 MYR which is around USD 218. For dependents, the additional fee is 500 MYR (around USD 109) for each dependent.

Extension

Initially, the visa is issued for 1 year and can be extended for the next 1 year. You have to apply for an extension before the original visa gets expired and the expiry date is mentioned on the visa.
